Credit Line on UPI in India (2026): How RBI's Pre-Approved Credit Feature Works and How It Differs From a Personal Loan

RBI's Credit Line on UPI, live since 2023 and expanded to small finance banks in 2025, lets banks extend a pre-sanctioned, unsecured credit facility inside a UPI app, alongside your bank account and RuPay card. There's no physical card or fresh application — eligible customers see it as an in-app option, select it at checkout, and authorise with their UPI PIN, drawing against a limit the bank already approved. HDFC, ICICI, Axis, and SBI are live, with interest charged only on the amount drawn — closer to an overdraft than a term loan.

Open your UPI app to pay a shopkeeper and, alongside your bank account and any linked RuPay card, you might now see a third option: a pre-approved credit line from your bank, sitting right there as a payment source. This isn't a RuPay credit card being used over UPI rails — it's a genuinely new lending product, built by RBI specifically for UPI, that lets banks extend short-term unsecured credit without you ever filling out a loan application.

What Credit Line on UPI Actually Is

RBI introduced Credit Line on UPI in September 2023, expanding UPI's funding sources beyond savings accounts and overdraft accounts to include pre-sanctioned credit lines from banks. In February 2025, RBI widened this further to let small finance banks offer the same feature, alongside the larger scheduled banks that were already live. The mechanics are deliberately simple: a bank decides, using its own underwriting and its existing relationship with you, to pre-approve a credit limit — often without you requesting one — and that limit becomes usable as a UPI payment method the moment you opt in and give explicit consent inside your UPI app.

How It Works at the Point of Payment

  1. Open your UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others support this depending on your bank's integration) and check payment methods for a 'Credit Line' or bank-branded credit option
  2. If your bank has pre-approved you, accept the terms and give explicit consent — this is a one-time setup step, not required before every transaction
  3. At checkout, select the credit line instead of your bank account or card as the funding source
  4. Scan the merchant's QR code and authorise with your UPI PIN, exactly as you would for a regular UPI payment
  5. The amount is deducted from your sanctioned limit, not your bank balance, and starts accruing interest from that date until you repay it

This Is Not the Same as RuPay Credit Card on UPI

It's easy to confuse this with linking an existing RuPay credit card to UPI, which our RuPay credit card UPI guide covers separately — but the two are fundamentally different products. Linking a RuPay card means you already hold a physical credit card, with its own credit limit, billing cycle, and reward structure, and you're simply adding it as a UPI payment method. Credit Line on UPI has no physical card at all — it's a standalone bank credit facility, sanctioned specifically for UPI use, that can exist entirely independent of whether you hold any credit card. A customer with no credit card can still be offered a credit line on UPI if the bank's underwriting model qualifies them.

Which Banks Are Live, and Who Gets Offered One

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI are among the larger banks live with credit line offerings on UPI, alongside a number of public-sector banks extending the feature to existing customers. ICICI Bank's tie-up with PhonePe is one of the more visible examples: pre-approved PhonePe customers can access a short-term credit line from ICICI of up to roughly ₹2 lakh, structured around a short repayment cycle rather than a long-tenure EMI. Eligibility isn't something you apply for in the traditional sense — banks use existing transaction history, account relationship, and internal credit scoring to decide who sees the offer, which is why it often appears as an in-app prompt rather than a form you fill out.

As a regulated credit facility extended by a bank rather than a private BNPL arrangement, usage on a credit line on UPI is expected to be reported to credit bureaus the way any other bank credit product is — though the exact reporting cadence can vary by issuing bank in practice. Building or protecting a strong score matters just as much here as with a personal loan, and the fundamentals in our CIBIL score and loan rates guide apply directly: better credit history generally means a higher pre-approved limit and a lower effective interest rate on what you draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Credit Line on UPI the same as linking a credit card to UPI?

No. Linking a RuPay credit card to UPI uses a physical card you already hold as a payment source. Credit Line on UPI is a separate, pre-sanctioned bank credit facility with no physical card involved — it can be offered even to customers who don't hold any credit card.

Do I need to apply for a Credit Line on UPI?

Generally no. Banks pre-approve eligible customers based on their existing relationship, transaction history, and internal credit scoring, and the option typically appears as an in-app offer inside your UPI app rather than requiring a formal application.

Which banks currently offer Credit Line on UPI?

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI are among the larger banks live with this feature, alongside several public-sector and small finance banks following RBI's 2025 expansion of eligibility.
