RuPay Credit Card on UPI 2026: How to Link Any Card, Which Banks Allow It, and the Transaction Limits

NPCI allows only RuPay-network credit cards to be linked to UPI apps like GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM — Visa and Mastercard cards sit outside this system entirely. Most major banks, including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and Axis, have completed their rollout, though linking is a manual one-time step inside each UPI app. A ₹5,000-a-day cooling-off limit applies for the first 24 hours after linking, after which normal UPI limits take over. Since September 2024, NPCI's reward-parity mandate means most eligible merchant UPI spends earn the same points as a regular swipe — except rent, wallet loads, vouchers, fuel, and tax payments, which stay excluded everywhere.

Scan-and-pay at a roadside stall, a kirana store, or a hawker who only takes UPI — and pay with your credit card's money instead of your bank balance. That's what linking a RuPay credit card to a UPI app gets you. It sounds like a small trick, but it changes where your credit float works for you: instead of confining rewards and grace-period interest to swipe transactions, they now extend to every QR code in the country. The rollout across banks has been uneven, though, and the first 24 hours after linking come with a limit that surprises almost everyone.

Why Only RuPay Cards Can Do This

This isn't a bank choosing to restrict you — it's a network-level rule set by NPCI, which operates UPI. Only credit cards issued on the RuPay network can be linked to a UPI app as a payment instrument. Visa and Mastercard credit cards have no equivalent linking path within UPI today. If your card is a Visa or Mastercard variant, the fix isn't a settings change — you'd need a separate RuPay card from your bank, and most banks now issue at least one RuPay variant on request even if it wasn't your original default network.

Which Banks Have Actually Gone Live

RuPay-on-UPI linking has been available since 2022, but individual banks activated it for their credit card base at different times, and a few took years to complete the rollout. As of 2026, the major issuers are live, though the specific card variant you hold still matters — some older or co-branded RuPay cards were excluded from early phases.

How to Link Your Card — Step by Step

  1. Open any UPI app that supports credit card linking — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM all do
  2. Go to the payment methods or 'Add payment method' section and select 'Credit Card'
  3. Choose RuPay as the network when prompted, then enter your card number and expiry
  4. Verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number — this is a one-time step per app
  5. Optionally set the RuPay card as your default UPI instrument, or leave your bank account as default and switch manually at checkout

Transaction Limits Once the Cooling-Off Period Ends

Do You Still Earn Reward Points on UPI Spends?

This used to be the biggest catch. Until September 2024, banks could — and often did — pay zero reward points on RuPay UPI transactions even though the same purchase on a physical swipe earned normally. NPCI's reward-parity mandate changed that: issuers must now give RuPay credit cardholders the same points on UPI merchant payments as on any other transaction, with one carve-out — categories where the bank earns no interchange fee at all stay excluded, because there's no margin to fund a reward on them.

  • Rent payments — excluded, regardless of the app used to route them
  • Wallet loads and prepaid top-ups — excluded
  • Voucher and gift card purchases — excluded
  • Fuel transactions — excluded (same as on physical swipes at most banks)
  • Tax payments and other cash-like transactions — excluded

Outside these categories — groceries, restaurants, retail, e-commerce via UPI — reward points now apply the same way they would on a card swipe, assuming your bank has correctly implemented the mandate. It's worth checking one statement cycle after you start using UPI heavily, since implementation gaps have shown up at a few issuers.

RuPay-on-UPI vs a Dedicated UPI Rewards Card

Linking your existing SBI, HDFC, ICICI, or Axis RuPay card to UPI is the zero-effort option — no new application, no new card to track. But cards built specifically for UPI spending, like the ones compared in our best UPI credit cards guide, often out-earn a mainstream bank card on UPI-specific rates, since they're designed around that use case rather than treating it as one category among many. The practical approach: link your existing card today for the convenience and the now-restored reward parity, and evaluate a dedicated UPI card only if your monthly UPI spend is large enough to justify carrying a second card.

There's a third, easily-confused option worth knowing about too: some banks now offer a pre-approved Credit Line on UPI — a standalone lending facility with no physical card at all, sitting alongside your bank account and RuPay card as a payment source inside the same UPI app. It's a different product from both of the above, built for short-term unsecured borrowing rather than card-based rewards.

This same UPI-linked spend also opens the door to a smaller trend: round-up savings apps like Jar that sweep the spare change from every UPI payment into digital gold. Since a RuPay credit card transaction now flows through the same UPI rails as a bank debit, it's one of the few ways a credit card spend — not just a bank account debit — can feed one of these round-up apps directly, where the app supports it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I link a Visa or Mastercard credit card to UPI?

No. UPI credit card linking as a payment instrument is limited to the RuPay network by NPCI rule. Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot be linked to a UPI app for scan-and-pay transactions.

Why is my UPI payment getting declined right after I link my card?

Most banks apply a ₹5,000-a-day cooling-off limit for the first 24 hours after a new RuPay card is linked to a UPI app, as a fraud check. The limit lifts automatically after that window.

Do I earn reward points on UPI payments made with a RuPay credit card?

Since September 2024, NPCI requires reward parity between RuPay UPI transactions and regular card transactions for most merchant categories. Rent, wallet loads, vouchers, fuel, and tax payments remain excluded because the bank earns no interchange fee on them.
