Gold Loan vs Personal Loan: Which Costs Less in 2026?
By Nitish Bharadwaj · Published Jun 23, 2026 · 5 min
Gold loans and personal loans are both quick-access credit, but their true cost differs sharply. A bank gold loan at 8.25–9% can be thousands of rupees cheaper than a personal loan at 12–15% for the same ₹2 lakh over 12 months. But NBFC gold loans at 12–27% can cost more than a personal loan from your bank. The RBI's April 2026 LTV relaxation now lets small borrowers access 85% of gold value for loans under ₹2.5 lakh. The lender you choose matters as much as the product.
Both gold loans and personal loans can get money in your account within 24 hours. But the interest rate gap is enormous — a bank gold loan at 8.5% versus a personal loan at 15% on ₹2 lakh means paying ₹3,400 more in interest over just 12 months. Yet NBFC gold loans at 18–27% cost far more than the best personal loans. Knowing which to choose depends entirely on where you borrow from.
Interest Rates: Side by Side
| Lender / Product | Interest Rate (p.a.) | Secured? | Credit Score Needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Gold Loan | 8.25–9.30% | Yes (gold) | No |
| HDFC Bank Gold Loan | 9.00–10.50% | Yes (gold) | No |
| Muthoot Finance Gold Loan | 12.00–26.00% | Yes (gold) | No |
| IIFL Gold Loan | 11.88–27.00% | Yes (gold) | No |
| SBI Personal Loan | 10.00–15.00% | No | Yes (750+ preferred) |
| HDFC Bank Personal Loan | 9.99–24.00% | No | Yes (750+ preferred) |
| ICICI Bank Personal Loan | 9.99–16.50% | No | Yes (750+ preferred) |
The table tells the story: a bank gold loan beats any personal loan on rate. But an NBFC gold loan at 18–27% is worse than a personal loan from SBI or HDFC. The lender matters as much as the product.
EMI Comparison: ₹2 Lakh for 12 Months
| Product | Rate (p.a.) | Monthly EMI | Total Interest Paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Gold Loan | 9% | ₹17,490 | ₹9,884 |
| HDFC Personal Loan (good profile) | 12% | ₹17,770 | ₹13,237 |
| SBI Personal Loan (average profile) | 15% | ₹18,052 | ₹16,620 |
| NBFC Gold Loan (Muthoot/IIFL) | 18% | ₹18,336 | ₹20,032 |
EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where r = monthly rate and n = 12. The SBI gold loan saves ₹3,353 in interest versus a 12% personal loan, and ₹10,148 versus an 18% NBFC gold loan — on the same ₹2 lakh.
RBI's New Gold Loan Rules (April 2026)
Effective April 2026, the RBI introduced a tiered Loan-to-Value (LTV) structure for gold loans. For loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, you can now borrow up to 85% of the gold's value — up from the earlier flat cap of 75%. Loans between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹5 lakh carry an 80% LTV cap, and loans above ₹5 lakh remain at the original 75% ceiling. The RBI also waived mandatory income verification for gold loans below ₹2.5 lakh, making them faster to access. Separately, RBI's new silver loan rules introduce a similar tiered LTV framework for silver jewellery loans — worth watching if you hold silver assets. That LTV table is only one part of a much longer rulebook — our complete breakdown of the 2025 gold loan directions covers the pledging limits, mandatory valuation certificate, gold-return deadline, and auction rules the LTV headline leaves out.
When a Gold Loan is the Better Choice
- You borrow from a bank (SBI, HDFC, Axis) where rates start at 8.25% — cheaper than any unsecured option
- Your CIBIL score is below 700 and you would not qualify for a competitive personal loan rate
- You have gold jewellery or coins sitting idle and need funds urgently — NBFC disbursal is often same-day
- The loan amount is small (under ₹2.5 lakh), where the new 85% LTV rule means you need less gold to pledge
- You plan to repay quickly — gold loans have 3–24 month tenures, which limits total interest outgo
When a Personal Loan Wins
- You have a 750+ CIBIL score and qualify for 10–12% from HDFC or ICICI — competitive with NBFC gold loan rates
- The NBFC gold loan rate you are offered is above 13–14%, making an unsecured loan cheaper
- You do not own gold, or the gold you own is family jewellery you are not comfortable pledging
- You need a longer tenure (3–5 years) — gold loans rarely go beyond 2 years, which raises your monthly EMI
- You want certainty: a personal loan carries no risk of gold being auctioned if you miss an EMI
