Mutual Fund KYC Status 2026: 'Validated', 'Registered' or 'On Hold' — What Each Means and How to Fix Yours

Mutual fund KYC now carries one of three statuses. 'KYC Validated' means your PAN, Aadhaar, email and mobile have been verified, and you can invest with any fund house. 'KYC Registered' means KYC was done with non-Aadhaar documents, so existing folios work but a new fund house will ask you to redo KYC. 'On Hold' blocks transactions, usually because of an unverified email or mobile or an unlinked PAN. Check your status on any KRA website with your PAN and fix it before your next SIP date.

Your SIP failed this month, or a new fund house rejected your first lumpsum, and customer care tells you the problem is your KYC. You finished KYC years ago, so this seems strange. What changed is how KYC is checked. Since April 1, 2024, KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs) have to verify every record against official databases, and each investor now has one of three statuses. Only one of them lets you invest freely. Here's what each status means and how to fix yours, usually in under a week.

What Changed in 2024

Under a SEBI circular issued in October 2023, KRAs must check each record's PAN, name and address against the Income Tax Department's database and Aadhaar records, and confirm the email address and mobile number on file. KYC done with Aadhaar-based documents can be fully verified this way. KYC done with other documents, such as a passport, voter ID or driving licence, can't be matched against Aadhaar and is treated differently. The scale was large: according to data reported by Business Standard, of about 10.8 crore KYC records, around 73% were validated by March 31, 2024, 15% were marked Registered, and 12% were On Hold.

How to Check Your Status in Two Minutes

Your KYC record is stored with one KRA, but every KRA shows the same status through a shared system. Open the KYC enquiry page of CVL KRA, CAMS KRA, KFintech KRA, NDML or NSE KRA, enter your PAN, and the status appears along with the name of the KRA that holds your record. The CAMS and KFintech investor portals and MF Central show it as well. Take a screenshot, because you'll need to know the reason code if the status is On Hold.

Fixing "On Hold": Match the Fix to the Reason

  1. Email or mobile not verified: this is the most common and quickest fix. Every KRA website has a validation link. Enter your PAN, confirm the one-time passwords sent to your registered email and mobile, and the hold is usually lifted within a few working days.
  2. Email or mobile has changed: you can’t validate a number you no longer use. Submit a KYC modification through any fund house, the CAMS or KFintech portals, or your broker, with the new details verified by OTP.
  3. PAN not linked to Aadhaar: an inoperative PAN puts KYC on hold. Link PAN and Aadhaar on the income tax e-filing portal, paying the ₹1,000 late fee if it applies, then wait for the PAN to become operative again. After that, ask your KRA or any fund house to refresh the record.
  4. Document deficiency or name mismatch: redo KYC using Aadhaar e-KYC or DigiLocker through a fund house or registrar website. If the name on your PAN and Aadhaar differs, even by an initial, correct one of the two first. Otherwise validation will fail again.

Moving From "Registered" to "Validated"

A Registered status isn't an emergency. Your existing investments, SIPs and redemptions with fund houses you already use carry on as before. The limitation shows up only when you invest with a fund house for the first time, such as moving to a new AMC's direct plan after reading about the direct vs regular plan cost gap. To upgrade, redo KYC with Aadhaar-based e-KYC on any fund house or registrar website. It takes about ten minutes online, and the status typically updates to Validated within a few days. After that, it applies across all fund houses and SEBI-registered brokers.

Special Cases

NRIs without Aadhaar usually can't reach Validated status and remain Registered with passport-based KYC. That is enough to continue with fund houses they already hold, but a new AMC may ask for fresh KYC documents, so plan any change of fund house in advance. For minors, KYC moves from the guardian to the child when the child turns 18, and SIPs can stop until the new adult completes their own KYC. Joint holders each need a valid KYC; if one holder's status is On Hold, transactions in the joint folio can get stuck.

If you're just starting out with a plan to invest ₹10,000 a month, complete Aadhaar-based KYC before your first SIP. It's the quickest route to Validated status, and you won't need to revisit it unless your email or phone number changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still redeem or continue SIPs if my KYC status is 'KYC Registered'?

Yes. A Registered status lets you keep transacting with fund houses where you already have folios. You only need to redo KYC with Aadhaar when you want to invest with a fund house for the first time.

What is the most common reason for mutual fund KYC being on hold?

An unverified email address or mobile number, followed by a PAN that isn't linked to Aadhaar. The email and mobile issue can usually be fixed through the OTP validation link on any KRA website within a few working days.

Where can I check my mutual fund KYC status?

Enter your PAN on the KYC enquiry page of any KRA, such as CVL KRA, CAMS KRA, KFintech KRA, NDML or NSE KRA. The status, and the KRA that holds your record, appear immediately.
